About Us

What is an Ajumma?

Ajumma is the Korean word for middle-aged married woman (starting from age 30 and up) with children. It has now become an insult to be called an Ajumma because it is associated with an unflattering image of an older woman with a short, permed hairstyle and questionable yet sensible fashion choices. They are hardworking women that make many sacrifices for their family and as a result have become disgruntled. If you see an Ajumma, give them a smile and greet them kindly even though they may grunt and give you a dirty look. Not all Ajummas have nunchi.

Who is Ajumma Rising?

We are a flash mob and community group made up of diverse misfit Ajummas focused on cultural education, social justice, and community building. We would love to showcase to others that we are not the conventional Ajummas many people grew up knowing. We are a new generation of Ajummas interested in taking time for ourselves while building Jeong with one another, educating others on Korean culture, and fighting for social justice and equity.
