unni of the month: lena unni
Annyeong! Tell us a little about yourself. Name and background.
My name is Lena Kim. I just turned 50, I am at peak ajumma age. I was born in S. Korea and immigrated to the US when I was 10. I was a terrible student in Korea and it carried over when I came here. I did a great job breaking all the stereotypes. Naturally, I gravitated towards art and creativity. I have 2 daughters, age 20 and 16. They are putting me through it...probably karma.
What does it mean to be an Ajumma?
To me, it means I have been through some stuff. Body, mind, and soul- I have lived it. I give no sh*t for dumb things and learned what those things are. Every decade has its lessons and I'm ready for this new decade.
Why did you join Ajumma Rising?
Although I haven't participated that much, I had a deep desire to connect with women that look like me and possibly build a community with such a sweet sentiment. There is a foundational connection and kinship here and I need more of that in my life.
What are your hobbies/interests?
I love making things and crafting. I love thinking about and designing new things to make. I love fashion and thrifting. I love eating, I'm chewing something at least 40%of my waking life. I like to to camp. I love movies, music, and just art in general. I love to dance but I hate performing. I'm shy! Lol.
What is your job/career/career/talent?
I currently own and operate a small shop called niceLena & Friends in Evanston. I make and sell a lot of the goods and also feature a unique blend of local/independent designers.
How can you help other Ajummas?
I'm pretty good with brainstorming sessions. I'm a problem solver and I enjoy spending time coming up with ideas. I also have a lot of fun crafting toys so I can help in that area. I'm also a fun person to chat with. I've lived long enough to know that to be true. 😊
