unni of the month: jen unni

Hi everyone! 大家好! 🍌

My name is Jen Chan (aka Banana Ajumma) and I joined Ajumma rising in 2023. My family is from Hong Kong and we have deep roots in Chicago’s Chinatown. My grandfather ran a restaurant, my uncle ran a restaurant, and somehow I inherited a food gene. Outside of Ajumma rising, I am the founder of Banato - a company that creates frozen treats which have no dairy and no added sugars - they are bananas! We are on a mission to make healthy foods accessible to all people and teach communities about fruits and vegetables. Typically we pop up in various festivals and farmers markets each summer

What does it mean to be an Ajumma?

To me, being an Ajumma means helping the next generation. Part of becoming older also gives the opportunity to give back and mentor others. I’m passionate about working with and teaching the next generation of entrepreneurs

Why did you join Ajumma Rising?

Women are taught by society to fear aging. In Chinese culture, women who are unmarried in their late 20s are called “剩女,” which translates to “Leftover Women.” I love how Ajumma Rising confronts those perceptions and helps Asian women to be unapologetic of age.

What are your hobbies/interests?

Outside of the kitchen, I love sports - especially running!

What is your job/career/career/talent?

Along with Banato, I work in food manufacturing in distribution. I’m constantly traveling around the country (and world) to help operations of various sites

How can you help other Ajummas?

If any Ajumma is interested in starting a business or needs help in any way, I’d be more than happy to chat. I am so grateful for this supportive and wonderful Ajumma community.

Keep shining ✨
