Unni of the month: Marguerite unni

Annyeong and Kamusta!

My name is Marguerite and I am a Filipina-American Ajumma who is originally from Southern California. My husband, Chris, and I are high school sweethearts. Due to school and work, we moved around and lived in a few cities before finally settling down (San Francisco, Seattle, and Phoenix to be exact). We moved to Chicago in 2014 with our fur-baby, Dougy, who just turned 18 last week (shout out to my baby boy- Mama loves you!)!

What does it mean to be an Ajumma?

An Ajumma is someone who is steadfast and unrelenting in their endeavors. They know what they want and will not compromise their beliefs. Ajumma's have integrity and loyalty. They are realistic in their approach and are honest about their opinions. Age and experience have brought wisdom but they are always learning and looking to improve. To be an Ajumma is a badge of honor because it means that you have survived trials and tribulations and have come back stronger and wiser.

Why did you join Ajumma Rising?

I'm an extroverted introvert so making and finding friends is challenging for me. When I heard about this amazing group of diverse women who got together to do things like flash mob routines, kimjang, and other social events, I was intrigued and went to one of their rehearsals. The warmth and welcoming atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for in a friend social group. Everyone is so talented and humble! I am just excited to be accepted as I am. Thank you, Seonbaes/Unnis!

What are your hobbies/interests?

I'm a huge geek when it comes to anime, food, kdrama, and sports! I enjoy listening to all types of music with a few exceptions -put on a good playlist especially some throwback hip hop and I'm ready to sing/rap along and dance. I like playing video games but Iโ€™m not very good at it and I like playing active sports but hate "working out". My husband and I have recently taken up golf so if anyone is up for a round or two, hit me up! I can't promise that I'll be very good but I'll keep practicing.

What is your job/career/talent?

My background is in CPG field marketing. I had the pleasure of bringing brands like KIND Snacks, Essentia Water, and Green Thumb cannabis products to life. I've always been passionate about food and enjoy cooking and eating at different unique restaurants. During the pandemic, I took an online pastry class and immediately fell in love. I truly enjoy the creativity and technique that comes from combining French tradition with updated flavor profiles and textures- I found my passion. I recently had the serendipitous opportunity to follow my dreams and will start FT as a self taught Patisserie/entrepreneur with my company, What Margie Made! ๐Ÿ˜Š

How can you help other Ajummas?

Aside from feeding and serving drinks at events ๐Ÿ˜œ, I'd love to be a resource and sounding board for anyone who is interested and just wants to talk and discuss life. I'm happy to support with anything professional if I have the expertise but reach out and let me know how I can be of help to you and the community.
