Unni of the month: Anna Unni
Annyeong!
My name is Anna and I am a Korean-American adoptee Ajumma. I was adopted at the age of 7 and came to American from South Korea. I grew up in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. I moved to Chicago for college and I have been here ever since except for my one year stay in LA for an internship.
What does it mean to be an Ajumma?
To me, being an Ajumma means love and resilience. I feel like an Ajumma is someone who is always taking care of others at the detriment of themselves. I’m hoping that our group and future Ajummas will embrace the beauty of aging and self-care.
Why did you join Ajumma Rising?
I joined Ajumma Rising because I love to dance and flashmob dancing was one of the main selling points to join the group. I also wanted to be more involved in the Korean-American community in Chicago. I hope that other mature women are able to find community and make time for themselves just for themselves. I feel like we are the kind of group that can provide that space through each other.
What are your hobbies/interests?
My interests and hobbies include dancing, roller skating, ice skating, bicycling, and running…when I can find the time. I play the flute and have been making videos since high school. I went from editing and filming videos on VHS tapes on camcorders to using my cellphone to make TikTok videos.
What is your job/career/talent?
Currently, I’m a stay at home mom and that keeps me very busy. I’d like to say that my talents are organization. I feel at peace when my home is in order and I’m also good at coordinating various events and projects.
How can you help other Ajummas?
If other Ajummas are open to it, I’d would love to be someone they consider a friend in order to provide a safe space to chat about anything that’s on their mind.
