UNNI OF THE MONTH: mia UNNI
Ahnyeoung!
My name is Mia and I am a proud Korean-American Ajumma.
What does it mean to be an Ajumma?
Being an Ajumma is a right of passage for me. To enter into Korean female middle age-dom is to embrace the part of me that is deeply rooted in a rich heritage of inner strength, smart resourcefulness and a huge love for delicious Korean food.
Why did you join Ajumma Rising?
Being a Korean American ajumma is an honor! I can be my full self as an aging woman who grew up as an American minority harassed for being Korean. I love Korean culture and people and feel deeply alive being able to express that part of my heritage as I not-so-slowly become my Korean immigrant mother.
What are your hobbies and/or interests?
My hobbies and interests include: Taiji, yoga, music, theater, nature, meditating, and Ajumma-ing.
What is your job, career, and/or talent?
I function as a grassroots eco-system of projects that connect people.
I am a taiji and yoga teacher, as well as an actress, event producer, and Certified Nurse Assistant. My boundless enthusiasm binds them all.
How can you help other Ajummas?
I can help with signal boosting, teaching yoga/taiji/mediation, organizing events, shoulder rubs, and mentoring those who are interested in freelancing.
